Book Circle: A Place Called Home, sponsored by CASA

Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Centre is partnering with CASA Summit County (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children), to host this month's CASA Book Circle on A Place Called Home: A Memoir by David Ambroz.

The first 20 registrants will receive a FREE copy of the book and will be entered to win a gift card to Compass (must be present on 5/23 to win). Books should be picked up before 5/16 at Elizabeth's Bookshop unless other arrangements are made. An email will be sent when the books arrive for pickup.

Join us for a light dinner, coffee, and conversation with CASA volunteers, CASA staff, CASA board members, and community members. Since this book circle is open to the community, feel free to invite a friend to join you!

A Place Called Home: A MemoirThere are millions of homeless children in America today and in A Place Called Home, award-winning child welfare advocate David Ambroz writes about growing up homeless in New York for eleven years and his subsequent years in foster care, offering a window into what so many kids living in poverty experience every day.

When David and his siblings should be in elementary school, they are instead walking the streets seeking shelter while their mother is battling mental illness. They rest in train stations, 24-hour diners, anywhere that’s warm and dry; they bathe in public restrooms and steal food to quell their hunger. When David is placed in foster care, at first it feels like salvation but soon proves to be just as unsafe. He’s moved from home to home and, in all but one placement, he’s abused. His burgeoning homosexuality makes him an easy target for other’s cruelty.

David finds hope and opportunities in libraries, schools, and the occasional kind-hearted adult; he harnesses an inner grit to escape the all-too-familiar outcome for a kid like him. Through hard work and unwavering resolve, he is able to get a scholarship to Vassar College, his first significant step out of poverty. He later graduates from UCLA Law with a vision of using his degree to change the laws that affect children in poverty.

Author Event with Mercy Tullis-Bukhari

Join us for an in-person reading with Mercy Tullis-Bukhari, author of The Little Deaths, followed by a book signing.

The Little Deaths is a collection about the fantastical, mythical, familial, and animal.

"From searing to sweet, Mercy's poems pull us into a maelstrom of passion, cynicism, ecstasy, fury, and joy so that we may understand the fullness of womanhood. Her words illuminate the often perilous path that Black women have to walk to simply find the space to say, I am."

—Keisha-Gaye Anderson

Register on Eventbrite for as little as $5

About the Author:

MERCY TULLIS-BUKHARI is a poet, essayist, and fiction writer who finds inspiration from being a Bronx-bred Afro-Latina American, Honduran and Garifuna, of Jamaican descent. Her maternal grandparents are from Belize and her paternal grandparents are from Jamaica. They all immigrated to Honduras, where her parents were born. She is proud of her immigrant roots, being first generation, and because she was and always will be a Bronx girl, she grew up eating lots of pizza in between all of the homeland dishes.

Being Afro-Latina American, to Mercy, means total acceptance of self. Who she is today reflects her Africanness, her Latinidad, and being American. She validates her identity by accepting her history, and proudly accepts that being a Black woman, Latina, who is a Bronx-bred American, is the sopa marinero of who she is today.

She graduated from New York University with a Bachelor’s in English and American Literature, minoring in English Education. She later received her Master’s from Herbert H. Lehman College in English Literature. She also received her Master’s in Fine Arts from The College of New Rochelle, in Creative Writing. The Little Deaths is her third book of poetry.
